Stephen F. Ellman specializes in
commercial litigation for financial institutions and other clients
involved in business disputes, complex real estate matters,
claims avoidance and creditors' rights issues. Steve has represented
lenders and special servicers in a host of matters, ranging
from commercial mortgage foreclosure actions to complicated
restructuring deals.
He has also represented clients in class action litigation
involving credit card finance charges, mortgage interest rate
adjustments, and telephone billing. Additionally, Steve works
closely with in-house counsel on a variety of commercial matters,
including claims arising under the Uniform Commercial Code.
He has lectured on a variety of U.C.C. topics, including the
revisions to Articles 3 and 4.
Following graduation from Georgetown University Law Center,
Steve became a Law Assistant to the Justices of the New York
State Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department. The
Appellate Division, Steve says, was an ideal career launching
pad: "I learned how judges approach and analyze cases, sharpened
my writing and critical thinking skills, and learned how to
be decisive."
As an associate with Shearman & Sterling, Steve was assigned
to the Bank Litigation Team. Thereafter, he moved in-house
to the Legal Department of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company,
where he was a Vice President and Senior Counsel. He actively
litigated cases, supervised attorneys, provided legal advice
to business areas, and worked with outside counsel in other
states.
Steve's practice at ZEK harmonizes the experiences that
he has had along the way. "Working in-house brought home the
fact that successfully representing clients in a cost efficient
way is more than mere lip service. I was forced to practice
efficiently, and have not stopped doing so." Steve believes
that in the era of mega law firms, ZEK provides clients with
a unique alternative for sophisticated, practical representation
at reasonable cost.
Outside of the office, Steve has been a fundraiser and a
president and treasurer of a cooperative housing corporation.
He has also been spotted on the sidelines of soccer fields,
basketball courts and squash courts all along the East Coast
rooting for his favorite teams and players.
